The 35th Wing was previously a 1st Air Force asset, but now reports to 8th Air Force. It is the major flying component of Air Forces Iceland. The complement of the 57th FS has been considerably reduced in view of the lack of Russian patrol aircraft activity.

8th Air Force casualties in 1994 were the 319th Bomb Group (B-1Bs and T-38As with the 46th Bomb Squadron/'GF') at Grand Forks, ND, and the 384th Bomb Group (B-1Bs and T-38As with the 28th Bomb Squadron/'OZ') at McConnell AFB, KS. The base at K. I. Sawyer is due to close in September 1995, the 410th BW transferring its aircraft to the 2nd and 5th Bomb Wings from mid-1994.

The 4th Wing lost two KC-10 Squadrons (344th and 911th Air Refueling Squadrons) which deactivated in 1994, the aircraft being reassigned to AMC. The 333rd FS activated as the type training unit .

The 347th was redesignated as a Wing (from FW) on 1 July 1994, and lost the 69th and 308th FS (F-16Cs) in FY 94, although the 307th will renumber as the 'new' 69th FS.

9th Air Force casualties in 1994 were the 42nd Bomb Wing (B-52G and T-37B with the 69th Bomb Squadron/'LZ') at Loring AFB, ME, which closed, and the 416th Bomb Wing (B-52H and T-37B with the 668th Bomb Squadron/'GR') at Griffiss AFB, NY.

For its global reconnaissance tasking the 9th RW maintains four detachments. These are det. 2 at Osan AB, Republic of Korea (RoK), det. 3 at RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus, OL-CH (Operating Location—Camel Hump) at Taif, Saudi Arabia, and OL-UK (Operating Location—United Kingdom) at RAF Alconbury, England.

The 38th RS provides flight crew for the RC-135U/V/W. Global detachments are maintained by Det. 1/55th Wing at Earackson AFB, AK (formerly Shemya AB), the 82nd RS at Kadena AB, Okinawa, the 922nd RS at RAF Mildenhall, England, and Det. 1/922nd RS at Soudha Bay, Crete. RC-135s are also operated regularly from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to monitor Iraq and support Operation Southern Watch.

The 354th FS was based at McChord AFB to support Army operations from nearby Fort Lewis. However this arrangement was not suitable and the aircraft returned to Davis-Monthan in 1994. One A-10 squadron has moved to Moody AFB to join the 347th Wing.
